How do those of us living outside of Ethiopia encourage our children to know more about our history and culture; and to speak our language?

I really need an advice from you guys because i do not know the answer myself. we are trying to teach the children in my church to learn thier relgion and heritage but it is really becoming difficult for us. We need  to stop thinking about us only, that is selfish. This childern are going to take over later and they going to be the leaders of our church. my worries are HOW are they going to lead this church if the church did not give them the knowlege and the SERATE? Please take a moment and write something that hepled your church youth or other churches. I will be glad to hear from all of you about this issue and hopefull will reach to the solution soon before it is tooo late to change things.

This is probably the one issue I can surely speak of. As an ethiopian child, I know the difficulty and the discrimination most kids face in schools, playgrounds and other areas. See it's very confusing for us becasue in school we have to pretend like we are Americans then at home or at church we are told to act like Ethiopians. Most parents turn agrresive and force us learn our culture, they fail to clearly EXPLAIN the importance of knowing your background. And becasue we lack this explanation, we loose interst and would not want to know more. In my case I was lucky because my parents didnt just make me learn my culture the told me why i should, and that really does help. And to all the kids, remember, culture is identity so learining the meaning of being an Ethiopian is only to your own benifit.

Teaching the next generation of kids is the responsibility of all Ethiopian Christians, whether we have kids or not. Our Church has a big part in teaching most Ethiopian kids in diaspora. Our Church fathers, instead of  fighting for earthely things, they should take this responsibity. What things they see in church makes a big difference in their life. Instead of being eccentric or selfish, all of us have to take a responsible objective to teach our good Ethiopian moral and other cultures to the next will be Ethiopian kids. At home, instead, of speaking in foreign language, we have to communicate in our Ethiopian Languages(Depending what language we speak).

When it comes to Faith (Orthodoxy) , Our Church Fathers Should take the major responsibility in Teaching our ChurchesDogma, Tradition(Qenona). SOme of Our church Fathers have lost their responsibility this days.It is time to teach our kids the good value of Ethiopianism not racism!!!It is time to teach our kids about Tewahido not protestanism!!!In some Orthodox churches we see peole fighting on race(zer)infront of our will be Ethiopian Citizens. is this what we have to show our kids???????

Teaching the values of Unity is th other thing we have to teachour kids. Not only our kids, but some of us need education  regarding what i did mention above.Unless we are equiped with the necessary tools ourselves, it will be very hard to teach our kids.let's be good Examples for the next Generation. If we love Ethiopia, let's bring Good Ethiopian values in our individual life and family and to the community at large.

God Bless You ALL

Happy Ethiopian Easter!!!

It's great that we are focusing on this issue since it is very important, but i said before and i'll say it again. The only way to keep our church's kenona dogma is to teach the youth amharic. I was born and raised in California. While i was growing up my mom forced me to stay in church starting from kidane until kidasse and temhert was over. I used to cry and complain and she would tell me that i had to stay regardless if i want to or not. Before i knew it the kidasse soaked in my memory like a sponge. If we keep our youth in church they will begin to understand the significance of our church's dogma and kenona. But in order for them to understand they need to first learn the language. At our church We have a projector which displays the kidasse in geez, amaharic, and english so everyone can follow along and know the meaning of what is being said. For most kids they don't care about the kidasse or temhert because no one really incourges them and answers their questions. I have much respect and i am very thankful to those of you who go out of your way to help todays youth if it weren't for people like you people like me wouldn't be proud servants of the orhtodox tewahedo faith. God Bless You.

Be seme ab wold ,menfeskidus amen. It is very interesting issue that every parent should worry about .As we all know back home every parent wants his child to learn foreign language esp.english believeing that different chances are with people who can speak foreign language which is by large correct. Most parents when we come here we come wtih limited knowledge of the language we may write it but no matter how good we are in the language just because we don't use it every day most of us are poor in the spoken part ,so i believe when we talk with our children we tend to talk with them in english may be because we like to improve ours disregarding the necessity of our language. Then after we believe we some how become ok meaning able to communicate in english it would be too late to reverse the case of the kids.so I suggest if possible, those of you who have good contact with an American who can volenteer to teach the language here in the church or by arrengement or our children who have graduated from higher institution able to teach can teach us and in return we teach them ethiopian language.comment

Most of Northern parts of Ethiopian people culture is majorly forms from Orthodox church. Our lack of reading our church rules, regulations and principles leads us not tot understand the value of that culture, even now adays most of the culture loose its base and we are using it for our selfish purpose. If we really read and understand the purpose the origin of this culture, we love to follow and enjoy it with others. If eating together becomes eating people with food, it will be worth to eat alone to have peace of God alone.

If we also understand and respect the other parts of Ethiopian cultures we can develop mutual understanding for peacful and loving friendship to know the truth of living in this world.

A  CALL  TO  ALL  AMHARAS

Psalm 80:
3 Turn us again, O God, and cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved.
4 O LORD God of hosts, how long wilt thou be angry against the prayer of thy people?
5 Thou feedest them with the bread of tears; and givest them tears to drink in great measure.
6 Thou makest us a strife unto our neighbours: and our enemies laugh among themselves.
7 Turn us again, O God of hosts, and cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved.

Tir Amanuel, 1996 Eth. C.

My dear people, I greet you in the Name of Our Lord God Iyesus Kristos.
The above prayer is taken from our father King David's Mezmure Dawit. By addressing this call specifically to Amharas I am not trying to be divisive or "tribal" like the current politicians in our country. On the contrary, I would like to point out to some of our people who are still in the dark as to what it is that hit us. We need to know the exact reasons of our problems if we can hope to remedy them. Why have we fallen? Why is our Ethiopia that our ancestors bled and died for going from bad to worse? Why has the whole world, including even our own brothers, turned against us? I believe these are the right questions that every conscientious Amhara ought to ask himself or herself. Frankly, I have been asking myself these questions for a long time now. I believe I have found the answer and that the Lord is with me when I state accordingly.

Our Amhara people are the direct descendants of the Tribe of Judah who accompanied Atse Menilik I, first-born son of King Solomon and Queen Makeda, back from the Land of Israel with the Ark of the Covenant. Being a people of the Holy Covenant of God entails special responsibilities for us. That is, we have to live according to the commandments of Our God. Then have we been true to the Covenant? How many of our intellectuals have become atheists? How many Amharas have converted to Protestantism? And how many have remained faithful to the laws of our Tewahido Church? Herein lies our fall. An Amhara by definition is one who is a member of the Tewahido Church and who lives according to her teachings. Having Amhara lineage or speaking the language are NOT enough. Because we have failed our Tewahido Church the very name of our blessed country Ethiopia has become synonymous with hunger and civil war, and now pestilence. There is not an end in sight for our downward spiral. May God have mercy on us for the sake of His Blessed Mother the Virgin Maryam and for the sake of our father St. Tekle Haymanot.

My dear people, I am the least among you. Yet I feel so burdened with grief with our current situation that I have no choice but to speak out. I tell the truth. I have no motive for lying. And I have no ambitions. My personal dream is to please Our Lady and inherit Her Son's Kingdom. Please come back to your Tewahido roots and strengthen the things that are weak. Help us in spreading this message. Do not be deceived by all the lies of the ferenj who are pretending to be smarter than Christ Our God. They don't know the truth. Seek for the Truth in your Tewahido Church and you shall find the Truth. Ethiopia's day is fast approaching. Lift up your eyes and pray. Thank you for listening.

May the Grace of the Holy Trinity and the Love of Our Lady the Blessed Virgin Maryam Mother of God be with all of us, forever. Amen.

God bless Ethiopia! Weyitbarek Egzi'abiher Amlake Israel we'Ityopya::

In Southern Ethiopia every Tewahedo Christian is called Amhara, no matter if he is Amhara, Oromo, Gurage etc. BUT as we are all Ethiopians, it would be better to make this call to all children of tewahedo, as there are ethnic Amharas who are not christians, such as Muslims, Jews, Pentes etc.

I think the best thing to do to teach kids their culture is not to force them but to make it interesting and understandable. How?! Depends on the age and interest. And the family need  to spend time with their children, it is hard when people have two jobs. But money is not everything so let's have time to look for each other's needs.

Dear Tiqur Anbessa,

I stand corrected.  The call to prayer is now directed to All Ethiopians including Tigreans, Amharas, Oromos, Gurages, Kembattas, Sidamas, etc.
