Over 10 years ago, Rev. Dr. Amare Kasaye, the church administrator, brought up the idea of preparing an organized program for children and started contacting volunteers to help organize a committee for this purpose. Ato Tamirat Zewdie, author of Ethio Soft Amharic software, volunteered to chair the first founding committee meeting and since then the committee was named “Timhirt Committee”. In its first meeting, the committee agreed to provide Amharic language class and seek help from the church and from outside sources to provide religious teachings and presentations on Ethiopian profile.
The Timhirt committee program launched its first Amahric language program by giving placement test to the first cohort and providing the language lesson in a shared room downstairs. The room was then shared with clergy who used it as a break room after Sunday service. Other programs, like religious teachings and songs, and presentations on Ethiopia were conducted upstairs. The religious part was led by Ato Shimelis Tuji, who was later joined by Wiz Kidist.
In appreciation of the severity of space problem, the church built rooms dedicated to children. These rooms are commonly known as ‘Computer rooms” which are located inside the downstairs hall. The committee used these rooms for Amharic language program and presentations. After securing these rooms, the committee started to offer the language programs with the help of about 20 donated computers using fonts in Ethio Soft software program.
With increasing number of children interested in the Timhirt Committee’s program and with other technical and pedagogical reasons, the use of computers as instructional tools were quitted and over the years the committee developed a curriculum with the help of Dr. Kassu Gebremariam. The church provided new classrooms at the newly bought location and very many volunteers joined to help the committee as teachers and members. Parents and Volunteers committee was also formed under the auspices of Timhirt Committee. Another volunteer, Ato Solomon Teklai, initiated a Saturday Tutorial program under Timhirt Committee’s leadership to help Junior high and high school students with their academic work.
Currently, the church has hired a director, Liqe Seuman Getahun Atlaw, to coordinate and execute Timhirt Committee’s programs and lead the religious programs. Liqe Seuman has also established a Youth Service to prepare young adults in their spiritual, emotional and social life. Every year attendees who participated in Timhirt Committee program receive award certificates in front of the congregation.
